Looking for a base camp
Over the past two weeks, Bobbee and I have been driving all over Georgia looking at possible sites for our base camp. The Georgia State Park system has a number of "group camps," complete with everything from a dining hall to a beach, which groups can lease for a week or so at a time. Our favorite camps right now are Indian Springs, which has dormitory style housing and FDR, which is one of the most beautiful parks in Georgia. We've uploaded some pictures below of both camps.
I've also been looking at sites for some of our local treks. The Chattahoochee National Forest in Northern Georgia looks like an ideal place to explore. Our rock climbing would take place on Yonah Mountain. I've been told that Yonah is one of the best teaching rocks in the southeast - it's also where the US Army Rangers train!
Not far from Yonah Mountain, the Chattooga River offers some of the best rapids in the south! It is also one of just a few rivers in the country designated by Congress as a Wild and Scenic River. Becuase of this designation, it's natural beauty has been preserved. The Chattooga River was also featured in the movie Deliverance.
For Shabbat in the Chattahoochee National Forest, Unicoi State Park offers a unique camping opportunity. The "Squirrel's Nest" campground features shelters built into a hill that each sleep four people. There is a beachhouse that we could rent for a beautiful Shabbat dinner overlooking the lake. There are some pictures of the campground and beachhouse below...
We hope everyone is enjoying Hanukkah! We'll be posting more often after the first of the year, so stay tuned!
